It's very important to understand who your Virtual Assistants are, and how they work. Need to know more about how VAs work? Here's an article to help: 101 Ways To Use A Virtual Office Assistant.

During the interview process, we suggest these important questions be considered when making your VA choices:

  • Are they a full-time or part-time VA?
  • How long have they been in business?
  • Can they provide references?
  • Are they involved in the VA industry?
  • Do they have certification designations, especially those that may fit into your service needs?
  • Are they involved in any local or online associations?
  • What is their turnaround time?
  • Do they guarantee their work?
  • What are their business hours?
  • Do they have staff or sub-contractors to help with overflow work or short deadlines?
  • Do they have a website? (Check their website content to get insights on their personalities and styles.)
  • What are their business practices (level of ethics)?

Next, connect with the VA directly, via phone, or if she or he happens to be local, schedule a time to meet in person. This get-together should help you find out if your personalities and work style are a fit, and whether or not this person has the specific skills and software experience that will match your needs. Now it's time to ask for their price and for any necessary contractual agreements that may need to be signed prior to starting your work together.

You may have noticed that asking for the VA's rates is pretty far down in the process. While rates are important and may differ from one VA to another, some of the reasons will be found by answering the questions outlined above. You will have a much more enjoyable VA experience if you focus on building a relationship with someone who fits well into your business profile, has the experience and skills you need, and understands how to run a business. Remember, you're looking to build a long-term relationship. If rates are too low, they won't stay in business long-term, which means that you could be interviewing and training new VAs every few years.

And finally, we suggest that you start slow. Whether you fully understand the concept of outsourcing to professional VAs, or you're sitting on the fence wondering if this is the right choice for you, it's best to start with one or two projects to see how it goes. This is a great way to find out if this is the right VA for you. One of the strongest advantages of working with a VA is that you have no long-term commitments or any legal exposure to your business to sever the relationship, as you would with on-site staff. Working with a Virtual Assistant is truly a win-win for savvy entrepreneurs, worldwide.
